Motivational Interviewing Course at Western Oregon University, Salem Campus April 3-June 5, 2019

Motivational Interviewing: Coaching and Helping People Change

April 3 – June 5, 2019

Taught by a professor who has spent his life working with others, this class will show you how to have better and shorter conversations that help people to make difficult changes.  Business leaders, parents, nurses, teachers, probation officers, counselors, coaches, pastors, wives, husbands and partners can all use Motivational Interviewing (MI) because they work with people who are facing challenges on a daily basis.  The scientific evidence behind MI’s effectiveness is robust; it works. There are over 200 randomized clinical trials, more than 25,000 articles and many books on MI. Everyone is naturally ambivalent about making changes in their life. Unfortunately, many people get stuck in their ambivalence. MI is a person-centered way of moving past this common experience of fear and desire at the same time.  The right kind of conversation strengthens our motivation to take concrete steps toward our goal.  MI elicits and fosters a person’s own reasons for change within an atmosphere of acceptance, partnership, evocation, and compassion.
This course is not academic, it will be practical, “hands on” and relevant to your relationships and context.  Through training, deliberate practice, feedback, and coaching, aligned with international standards, you will learn the mindset and skills of MI competency.  There are no prerequisites for the course, but it will change your life and conversations.
